Transgender Health and Wellness Day 2018

by Dr. Camilla Williams

I was excited to be able to be part of the Transgender Health and Wellness Day at the San Diego LGBT Community Center last Saturday, representing Waves, A Psychological Corporation. This event was organized by UC San Diego AntiViral Research Center & Project Trans at the Center.

There was a great resource fair with sponsors offering legal services, health care resources (Please check out the picture below to see me at Waves’ table.), medical information, and information about civil rights. The volunteers were knowledgeable and friendly, and they offered a delicious lunch and snacks across the day.

I’m tabling!

For me, the highlight of the day was the keynote presentation by Bamby Salcedo. Ms. Salcedo is a “highly regarded, nationally and internationally recognized activist, advocate, community organizer and social justice advocate and professional” who talked about working toward change through times of adversity.

She pointed out that mainstream narratives have always tried to erase the transgender community and that transgender people can and have always advocated for visibility and rights.

Her story was very personal and powerful.

Afternoon breakout sessions covered topics such as hormones and health, mental health, and general wellness. The event organizers made sure to include Spanish/English interpreter services for those of us who primarily understand one or the other language. In addition, there was a Latinx track that was presented in Spanish.

This event was advertised as the first annual Transgender Health and Wellness Day. I look forward to learning what is in store for next year and beyond.

Below are some details about the event from the organizer’s Facebook page :

About Dr. Camilla Williams (PSY 27200)

Hi, I’m Camilla Williams, Ph.D. I’m a psychologist but you might also call me a listener, a carer, or a gardener of personal growth.

I help people who want to understand themselves better and make positive changes in their lives but aren’t sure how to take the first step and are held back by all the unknowns.

I support them as they identify their thoughts, feelings, and desires so that they can find their own voice and use it boldly.

I know the power of story from growing up in the Deaf community. I believe, based on both personal and professional experiences, that everyone deserves to tell their story and be believed. I believe that through telling our stories, we find our own wisdom and the strength to be our true selves.

I believe that knowing yourself and following your core beliefs will change the world. That’s why I hope you will schedule an appointment with me today.
