3 Reasons To Go To Therapy At Waves

There are three main reasons why people seek Waves’ clinicians out. Most have to do with our ever-lasting commitment to centering queer and trans all LGBTQI+ people’s mental health needs.

The First Reason

The first reason is that the person wants to explore their identities and wants somewhere that won’t judge them negatively for it. At Waves, we don’t privilege one identity over another. We are with you every step of the way, as you figure out your own identity(ies).

The Second Reason

The second reason is that people want a therapist who they know who will accept their identities while they are dealing with their deepest troubles. We will not ask you in-depth questions about your identity(ies) unless it relates to something you are struggling with. I have had a therapist who has asked me extensively about my Judaism even though why I was coming to see them had nothing to do with my Judaism. It was uncomfortable. I don’t want to do that to a client if at all possible.

At Waves, we’ll focus on what you want to focus on. Perhaps, that’s your relationship(s), perhaps it is your frustration with your family of origin. (You know, those people who you chanced into living with, usually by blood or adoption but not always.) Maybe it’s your interest in newer therapies to address pain you’ve been carrying around. Perhaps, you want to try out Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy to help you connect to your body after your miscarriage or you are ready to resolve your fear of driving once and for all through EMDR. Whatever you come to see us about, we will co-create your treatment plan around your goals.

The caveat to this is if there is something life-threatening that we will want you to also address to your goals. For example, if you want to work on coming out as trans at work and you also share that you want to die, we will help to integrate both goals, coming out at work and living, as what we work on.

The Third Reason

The third reason that people see us at Waves, is that they have heard that we are good therapists and they want to work with us. What does it mean to be a good therapist? This is a hard question and could spawn many a blog post, let alone several books. In short, a good therapist, to me, is one who can really listen to the client.

In long, listening has many components and is what we mean when we say that psychology is both an art and a science. A good therapist is hears or sees the client. We witness them. We notice the client’s growth. We look for how clients say what they say: the tone in their voice, how their body moves or stays still when they speak or sign. We listen or watch for the meaning behind the words and where they fit within the client’s own growth and identities, and the sociopolitical and or social justice frameworks. We hear or see how we feel in our bodies when a client’s words are spoken or signed. What emotions do their words evoke in us. We are also mindful of how the client’s words fit within what the client wants to work on. And we are truly with the client. We are focused on the client; they are our priority.

We provide these listening skills with a wealth of ever-expanding knowledge. We are often good fits for many people as they look for a counselor who can meet them where they are and help to heal from their pain.

Other Reasons People Want To Go To Therapy in San Diego, CA at Waves Psych

Sometimes people feel that if we can deal with complicated topics, then they feel that we can handle their concerns. Or they’ve heard how helpful we’ve been to/with one of their friends or co-workers or someone else in their community (ies). Some feel, and rightfully so, that if we honor people’s identities, then we will honor that their brother is trans or that their sister is a queer parent. Or they will want to work with us because their kid is newly out as trans and they want to support them but aren’t sure how. Or they have heard about Camilla’s ability to put people at ease my punny humor or our general down-to-earth natures.
