Spirit Day 2021 by Camilla Williams, Ph.D.

We here at Waves, A Psych Corp care about LGTQQIAP2 youth and recognize that they can be vulnerable to bullying from peers, teachers, and family members for their identities.

We work to support queer and trans youth in living their best lives, including standing against bullying. As a sign of that commitment, we will be wearing purple this Thursday in honor of Spirit Day 2021.

Spirit Day was first suggested by a teen in 2010 to honor the memories of LGBTQQIAP2 youth who died by suicide after being bullied for their identity (Check out The Advocate’s timeline of Spirit Day’s history here: https://www.advocate.com/news/2019/10/17/history-glaads-annual-spirit-day#media-gallery-media-1 ). It has grown into an annual event in which people are encouraged to pledge to support LGBTQQIAP2 youth against bullying and to wear purple as a sign of that commitment. This year, Spirit Day will be Thursday, October 21. Please head to https://www.glaad.org/spiritday to sign the pledge, find resources, and learn more about how to support our youth.

Dr. Abi Weissman (pronouns: she & they) works directly with LGBTQIQAP2 youth and their caregivers and/or parents. Should you be looking for adult or relationship support, Dr. Camilla Williams (pronouns: she, her, hers) would be a great resource.
